In theory, I agree that tipping is not a requirement. However, the IRS seems to believe that everyone does it fairly and taxes me on 8% of my net sales; this after I have shared 33% of my intake with my supporting staff. Obviously I have to maintain about 12% to make it “fair”. There are some who almost never tip, or tip unjustly in relation to the amount of money they spend on food and service. For those who don’t believe in tipping, I’d ask one of two things. One, help to lobby Congress to change the tax laws so it isn’t assumed that everyone tips (not likely to happen). Or two, find alternative ways to get your meal where you are not being waited on…order take-out…self-serve or counter type establishments. Though it is not required, it is socially accepted as the way the system runs. I find that most non-tippers or unjust tippers seem to have little problem ordering a lot of foods and/or higher priced items. It is only when they receive the bill that they begin looking for a bargain and the tip is the easiest way to help offset spending more than they wanted to pay.
