I am a server, and I would just like to mention that ALL resturants, not just 4 star resturants, servers must tip out to busboys, bartenders and foodrunners, based on the servers sales. I just want people who come to this site looking for what is appropriate for tipping servers to put this into consideration. […]
Your information relating to pizza delivery tips is outdated. With inflation and the ever-increasing gas prices, the amounts you list for pizza delivery are far under what they should be. If everyone tipped pizza drivers what you recommend, we pizza driver’s wouldn’t make enough money to maintain our personal vehicles much less pay any of […]
I am thrifty, but I do value good service. As stated on your web page, tips should be accepted, not expected. Tipping at hair salons is very vague. If you go to Great Clips or Fantastic Sam’s or any regular salon where the hair cut costs less than $30, tipping should be generous because the […]
Tipping is not an option. Tipping is required. The IRS taxes waitpersons based upon the IRS’s estimate of how much a waitperson earned in tips. Tipping does not ensure even mediocre service which is the best for which you can hope. “The Original Tipping Page is decades out of date.
I am a server in a Fine dining steak house in Long Beach., CA. Because of some complaints by bussers, regarding server tip outs the Mngmnt has decided to post not only server sales every night, but also server Credit Card tips. This is tantamount to posting our salaries on the crew room board. Are […]
Feedback: Why should a $20.00 steak dinner warrant a bigger tip than a $8.00 Burger. Why is the tip set according to the size of the bill. The waitress does the same smount of work.I think it should be set on the number of persons in the party.
Where are you getting this information? By the way, your “waitress gripes” page is no longer active, and most of the links to/from your website have problems as well. I’d like to gripe to you on quite a few counts, but I’ll keep it quick. One is, it completely depends on the location of a […]
Looks like you have a good website. I was able to open up the 20/20 screen but couldn’t the other screens I wish you the best and do agree with you that the www.fairtip.org is out of place. We, the custoemrs, are the source of the problem in the food serving industry. We are the […]
In CA, an employer may not directly or indirectly (via its agents (e.g., supervisors, managers, etc.) share or receive an employees tips. Moreover, case law states thtat a tip-pooling can be required, but only among those employees providing direct table service (e.g., bussers, hosts, servers, etc.).
It’s true that tipping is not common in NZ, but it is becoming more common with increased tourism over recent years. It is common for cafes and restaurants to have a jar at the counter for tips – often you/’d put your loose change in it. As a foreigner in the US, I found your […]
Inregards to your car attendant tip i diss agree. my brother in law works for disney too as a car attendant, and the get pay the min. wag for watresses and waters. so about $3.15. that means they also live off tips fo $1 is not any were close to what should be tipped. and […]
Tipping infuriates me!!!! Waiters are paid to do their job and do it well. If they don’t like the salary then they should go elsewhere. Wy should they expect a tip when that is their job to satisfy the coustomer and their emplolyer. I say down with tipping.
I’m cheap, so I need someone to tell me that I need to tip (I always tip my waiter/waitress 10%+ regardless of service, but don’t always tip tour operators, hotel room cleaners, etc.) My comment, after my introduction, is that it would be helpful to include a few Examples of a typical restaurant bills and […]
I just wanted to know if there was a professional way of letting clients know that tipping/gratuity is a part of our paycheck. I work in a salon in NC and just moved there from FL. I don’t think people up here are educated on gratuity in a salon..the ratio is like 50% don’t tip. […]
I have been a waitress for 30 years and i tip to every one that deserves it and more and i think a lot more people should tip more.
Why do people understand that they are supposed to tip waiters but do not understand that pizza delivery guys use their own cars and gas and bring them a hot meal to their door and either give them nothing or maybe a dollar or two. My husband and I both lost our jobs and this […]
I would like to make a comment about tipping fFom my husband’s experience. The poeple who have the money to tip are usually the one who DO NOT tip. He works part time for aservice that provides drivers for funeral homes. Most of these drivers are retired men who work for $9-$10 per hour to supplement […]
I pride myself on being a good tipper at restaurants but I m going on vacation and had no clue how to tip while traveling. Thanks so much for the insight. Equipped with the info you provided, I can guarantee the bellman will love to see me coming!!
The page you took from how to tip a bellman is great… I looked all over the internet for it, and your the only place that had it… Thanks for posting it. It made my entire staff laugh…
I’m getting a little peeved at people who denegrade tavelers for not tipping like fat cats. Some of us can’t afford to throw every bellman and maid a fiver every time we’re blessed to get their attention. If you don’t want the two or three bucks I give you to escort my luggage to the […]
Do you feel that a tour guide should share her tips 50/50 with her motorcoach driver on a day trip, when her job consists of delivering commentary, giving outstanding customer service, conducting walking tours, doing all the behind the scenes work that tour guides do and, the drivers’ job is that he drives, does not […]
I disagree… I worked in a buffet/steakhouse. although we did not take the order we did everything else… we bought dinners from the kitchen, brought drinks, helped keep the buffet stocked, and at slower times bused our own tables. And, probably the hardest part of the job, because of the nature of the buffet, there […]
You should tip on the total bill regardless of your pleasure. The person accommodating your ego is being taxed in so many ways. Wake up and be gracious. If you can’t afford to tip on wine you can’t afford to drink it. And if you justify it, you are cheep and good luck.
I live in Australia and tipping is not normal here. I have wondered why people need to tip a person for doing their job. People are employed to do a job, and at all times it should be the best they can do so why would anyone then give them more money for doing their […]
Servers are required to report sales as if they were tipped on 8-10 % of their sales or run the risk of being audited by the IRs, (and yes it happens frequently.) If someone has a $300 tab, $200 of that liquor, and they only leave $15 because thats 15% of everything but the 4 […]
I have worked in the resturant bussiness for 10 years and have never come accross the situation I am in now. My employer pays everyone minimum wage, even the cooks. I as a server have to pool all of my tips. The cooks end up walking with the same amount of money I am. An […]
As a professional towing operator and company owner I am constantly surprised at the amount of people that don’t tip… We provide a very valuable service with none of the BS associated with many other professions, try getting the cable man to come fix your TV at Midnight on Friday. Take into consideration response times […]
charter pilots seem to be the underpaid, undertipped, forgotten members of the service industry. A few of our customers recocognize this, but most do not. Those that do will usually tip each crewmember $100 for a short trip and $200 for a long one. We would appreciate if you could include this in your future […]
Everyone seems to miss the point of tip credit. When in doubt ask why, then why again. And the answer is, “It’s all about taxes. Currently the Restauranteur, pays taxes on real wages (hourly), then collects tip info and pays taxes on that, but can’t declare that as wages”. So the point is, are tips […]
I am disgusted by your bellhop’s page on tipping a bellman. “$1 is for us looking in your direction” That disgusts me. There is nothing more I hate when I am carrying my small carry on bag into a hotel and a bellman comes up to me and tries to portray that he is just […]
In theory, I agree that tipping is not a requirement. However, the IRS seems to believe that everyone does it fairly and taxes me on 8% of my net sales; this after I have shared 33% of my intake with my supporting staff. Obviously I have to maintain about 12% to make it “fair”. There […]
Tipping the bellman article is offensive, I choose to tip and its my discretion. Obviously I have concern about tipping or I wouldn’t be at this site. Not using a bellman for my bags does NOT make me a loser. No one is forced to tip and those of us choose to do so at […]
I still don’t understand why we are expected to tip: waiters/waitresses, the mailman, garbage man, etc. They are paid to do a job just as we all are. Some say we should tip because their wages are low; they do a service, etc. Most peoples jobs are for some kind of service or another: the […]
NOTICED YOUR CALIFORNIA LAW SO I ASSUME YOUR FROM CALI?? AND I ASSUME YOU “CALIFORNIANS” GO ON VACATION AND TIP ALL OVER THE PLACE? *COUGH!*BSHIT. BEING FROM VEGAS YOU HAVE THE BIGGEST REP FOR BEING “CHEAP” SRY… I RECENTLY VISITED YOUR LUVERLY STATE…..HAD A NICE MEAL AT SEAPORT VILLAGE THE PIER..ANYWAY WAS SHOCKED TO SEE […]
I am a monthly parker in a garage that parks and retrieves the car for you – it is policy. Daily I tip which ever attendant $1.00. Would a tip of $50 for the manager, $25 for the a.m. attendants (almost no interaction with them), $30 to the p.m. attendants, and $25 to the young […]
Sir, You are a very angry and greedy person. When I do use bellmen, I tip well. Sometimes, I don’t part with my bag and take it to the room myself because you are so slow getting it to my room. Why should I tip you to bring my bag to me 15 minutes later…when […]
Who’s the idiot that came up with the tipping rate card. First of all, we are in a new century, and secondly standard tipping for a wait staff should basically start at 20% and go from there. As for the tip being calculated ‘before’ tax? Who the hell is really that cheap that they can’t […]
I was offended by a remark about ordering water with dinner because people are cheap. I feel your thinking should be revised. Some people may be trying to save the cost of a drink, but most people are not. However, there may be other reasons. In my case, I am diabetic and the only drink […]
Massage Therapists have worked very hard and continue to strive to be regarded as allied health care professionals. With that in mind, they/you should consider the following question: Do you tip your physician? physical therapist? chiropractor? etc. The answer will most likely be a resounding “no”. There is a difference between a massage “therapist” and […]
In our country, “tipping” has mostly been institutionalised. As “tips” are included everywhere (before VAT and other taxes are added to the bill), it’s only on the visa-eurocard-etc slips that people still add a “motivational tip”. In some movie theatres, the lady who shows you your seat doesn’t get paid: THERE we tip (one, two […]
Never tip the owner of any business or anyone who has the power to set their own prices and therefore, get the profit they wish to make, i.e. massage therapist, hairdressers, etc. Only tip what you can afford and according to the service you received. Tips are voluntary but many waitstaff just feel entitled no […]
Some guests are exceptional, others are generious, few are assholes.
I believe tipping is a scam on the public. Why must I pay someone to bring food out. How else can I eat it if someone dosen’t bring it out to me? The food is already expensive and this just adds to it. Why do I have to help pay a restaurant owners employees. Do […]
Tipping in America has become a huge joke. We tip as if it were something manditory in our culture. We are ridiculed or at a minimum thought ill of if we fail to tip. Then, you post articles like the one about the bellman tipping that truly shows what fools Americans have become. One should […]
You list the poker tip as $5 per session. Any of the casinos I play at, the custom for a cash game is $1 per hand that you win. For tournaments, the tip is generally already included in your entry fee.
I tip waitresses only, but think tipping is old fashioned. I have never been tipped in my life, for doing a good job, I’ve done a good job because thats what I’ve agreed to do for the pay that my employer has agreed to pay me. If you can’t make it on the money you’ve […]
It’s a shame that travellers to the US have to learn so much beforehand. After reading this informative site and particularly the forum comments, I plan to be very cautious about where I eat and stay, to make sure I don’t get my food spat upon and bags stolen or gone through. Must be a […]
If you don’t tip the bus person, seating hostess or the person who brings your water in a regular restaurant, why should the same person in a buffet get a tip? 10% for about one minute of work! Tipping is just getting ridculous! Why should unskilled labor get what amounts to about $80 per hour […]
After reading your suggestions about how to tip a bellman I realize I will never waste another penny on one again. Remind me why you are so special? May I inform you that to the rest of the intelligent world you really are JUST a bellman. Get a real job if are in need of […]
I’m a hard working waitress and I’d like to make it clear to everyone who ever visits England and enjoys a meal out…please tip in cash not on your credit card as this is the only way to guarantee your waitstaff get the tips you leave for them. Credit card tips are rarely given back […]
15% seems high for a beauty shop. Considering I spent $260.00 today for myself and my daughter to have color and cut, that would be a $39.00 tip! Just a thought but don’t they get paid, unlike waitresses in a restaurant who depend almost entirely upon tip income? I found your site because I realized […]
Tipping for a massage? B.S.! It’s no surprise that the entry was input by a massage therapist! Let me explain why the standard tip for a massage is Z-E-R-O. And this explanation can be used as a rule of thumb across the board. At a restaurant you are paying for the food and tipping for […]
After a debate with my husband regarding the fact that he regularly tips the salon owner who gives him a “finger cut” that takes ten minutes, I asked several salon owners if a tip was expected. Their response was that since they owned and operated the salon as well as performing regular duties, they did […]
I couldn’t even finish your web page do to the fowl language. For someone who is trying to get bellmen a better break, you sure are making them look less than deserving.
Regarding tipping for fast food (pizza or Chinese), your suggestion states that no tip is required, but .50 – $2 is appreciated. I have always considered tipping the driver 15-20% of the bill, provided the service is timely & friendly. I am a concierge, so I pride myself on tipping as generously as I hope […]
Just a side note… some Cruise Companies (ie Princess) are now addig the gratuities in to your price. They usually include a low price so I suggest still including a bit more.
Why should we tip anyway? Most restaurant do pretty good. They hired the people ,they should pay them a descent salary,or try another livelyhood. Are they the same people ,that open another restaurant or two, they must be making money somewhere.
15%?????????????????????? oh i can see why your not into tipping! gonzalez.
I am a server (more proper term), in a fine dining restaurant. Our service is outstanding and for the most part we are tipped well. Something I would like to point out that most people don’t realize is the tax factor. Now I don’t know if states are all different or even restaurants, but we […]
What is this about 20% being the new 15%? I think 20% is a joke with prices going up everywhere.
No blog about the Tax Free Tip Act? It would seem fitting
Tipping is not only a great way to say thanks for a great service but also a way to ensure you get great service! As such, I’ve started a community website that applies this principle to the art of finding and haggling bargains. This may seem like an un-natural marriage but bear with me! Whilst […]
First let me say that I am a non tipper. why should I give any extra money to a waiter for a job that they are getting paid for in the first place, It is not my problem if they dont have a good enough job that pays well…..
If a hair dresser recieves 10-20 percent and does not have to deal with customers who misbehave, are in poor condition. and have to be rebathed due to (accidents) shouldn’t dog groomers get at least, if not more than what beauticians do as a tip?
I was asked one night if our dinner salads consist of vegetables….Uuuummm… yea? A friend was asked exactly what we put in our cinnamon apples. Well gee! Usually, cinnamon and ummmm apples?
I went to great clips today for a haircut & the stilest by the name of dessie companion,in the collegeville pa. salone refused to do my hair. She gave me a bad cut before,so i thought i would give her a nother chance. She turned me away, with a very unprofessional attitude.I was shocked!Never again will i go […]
I don’t think that the tipping guidelines for delivery are very good. To say that it’s unneccesary to tip for delivery is wrong. Sure it’s not obligatory, but it’s also not very nice. This is a trusted website, so it would be nice for tipping to be encouraged when I’m pretty sure that delivery people […]
I’ve been informed on numerous occasions that personal services such as manicures deserve 20% for a decent to good job. I only tip 15% if the service was “simply satisfactory.”
Wow how jaded have people become. The reason food costs what it does is not because of how much they get it for. It involves prep cooks, cooks, cleaning crews, keeping the lights on, keeping the temperature acceptable, etc. As our daily lives are lived in inflation so is the restaurant and it’s cost. If […]
I tip $1 for a lunch buffet up to $10, then more for excellent service, extras, drinks in excess of normal refills, etc. Higher priced buffets are not common in OKC, OK, but evening meals may be higher and I try to maintain a similar ratio, like $2 for buffets over $10/person.
I went to Vegas and visited a well known dance club. I tipped the dj $10 to play a great dance song that he said he WOULD play. After almost 3 hours the song was still not played and I was ready to go home. What should I have done? (note: I have been in […]
I can’t believe that after 14 years in the same restaraunt, I am being told that 15% is still ok. Is this the only job in the entire country that is expected to go decades without any type of raise? Seriously??? Try paying your bills on 15% and sub-minimum hourly rates….ridiculous….We deserve raises too like […]
Why on earth would you tip a cashier? Absolutely not!
I am an usher at a large urban sports facility, and we are (sadly) prohibited from accepting tips at any time for any reason. Other service providers do not operate under this prohibition.
Being around food service for many years, especially catering, we all know and should agree that the most that you tip a waiter is 15%, especially with the rise in food costs. The cooks do not receive tips and they really do not make any sort of big money. 20% is just outrageously absurd. $20 […]
I have been a bartender/waiter on and off for about 5 years total. I have always heard that patrons should NOT tip the owner of a bar/restaurant when that owner is the bartender/waiter. Is this true? I\’m perplexed over this question because a new bar/restaurant opened near my home recently, and the owner and his […]
We tried to tip the AAA tow truck driver today. He said he could not take it. He said if we were called to give a rating on him, giving a postive comment would be his tip.
Could someone tell me what percentage restaurant owners are required to claim for their servers? I’ve worked in places where managers claimed 20% of a servers gross sales. When it came to taxes, it actually cost the SERVER money to wait on anyone tipping less than 20%. Also, the servers had to tip out a […]
Do you pay 5% less for breakfast and lunch? In a hotel do you pay by the day or the week? Do you use an envelope or pay the individual in cash, and if you do use an envelope, what do you write on the envelope “Maid”? On a cruise you have 2 to 3 […]
now, i understand tipping a massage therapist if the person works for someone, but what if they are the owner, and operator, with no employees??? And, this would be no 50 dollar massage, it is deep tissue for 100.00, for an hour. My thought, is NO TIP, because they can set their own rates, they […]
I’m having a cook from a local restaurant cook up some food from a menu we have devised. We agreed on a price for the entire party. He is delivering the food and suppling the chafing equipment. Would a tip be advised and if so, how much would be proper?
A $0.25 minimum is way too low. I am a cab driver in Texas and if I am friendly to you, I tell you interesting things about the city that you can’t find out about in guide books, and I drive you to your destination safely and efficiently then I have earned at least a […]
I am amazed that I am supposed to tip my hair dresser so much! I have been under tipping, without knowing it, for 30 years! Don’t they make more than $2.13 an hour? How are they paid?
Food delivery drivers should be tipped 15% to 20% of any order. Most of the time the compensation they receive from their employer is far too inadequate to realistically cover the costs of maintaining their vehicles. Most or the reinbursement shemes pizza delivery companies offer their drivers is just a plain joke, especially since gas […]
I thought you and your membership might be interested in this information about the Tax Free Tips Act, as introduced last Tuesday by Congressman Ron Paul. Introducing the Tax Free Tips ActRon Paul Speech to CongressSeptember 25, 2007 Madam Speaker, I rise to help millions of working Americans by introducing the Tax Free Tips Act. […]
In your tipping guidelines, you should include tipping with respect to entertainers. I am a belly dancer at an Egyptian restaurant and I work on tips. Other entertainers include violinists, pianists, balloon artists, etc. I have found that most people have absolutely no idea of what to do with respect to restaurant entertainment, even though […]
your site sucks and your so call code #s SUCK
I work as a concierge in a hotel and it baffles me that for the most part, there are no guidelines for tipping concierges. We perform a service just like any wait person, stylist or bartender, sometimes spending hours or days working out amenities or handling details for guests. It’s my opinion that we deserve […]
Actually standard tipping for a massage therapist IS 15-20%. Having working in upscale resorts for 9 1/2 years that was the protocol. Not to mention those very generous guests who would give a $50 tip for a great massage.
gas $3 plus a gallon and the 15,20,30 or more min. it takes to deliver food. (time that could be used waiting on other customers) your tip suggestion is NONE NECESSARY. 20% To walk 20feet from the kitchen to the table. I don’t get it!
How much tip should i give a waiter at a resteraunt that I go to every week.
I would argue that a tip is required for tattoo or piercing services. 15-20% of the total tattoo price. Of course referrals are appreciated, but if you don’t tip you will notice your bill is higher next time.
Massage therapists who work FOR spas, wellness centers, & private practice are customarily tipped 15-20% of the service provided. (Please note that MTs recieve a percentage, usually 20-40%, of the fee set by the owner/ establishment for the service). Tipping massage therapists at a doctor’s office is not expected. Tipping a massage therapist who is […]
I don’t understand the concept of tipping at all. You don’t tip people working in shops or bus drivers, why should I tip people working in restaurants and taxi drivers. Makes no sense at all. The charge for service is set (eg. menu) and that’s what I pay, full stop.
OUTRAGEOUS …..Am shocked that this is even a issue …Everywhere you turn their shoving is in your face. Am going to start charging companies for using their products and patronage their stores!!!What goes around comes around.Ridiculous ….
